Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages via art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at college. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
